A carotid artery duplex scan is a type of vascular ultrasound study done to assess occlusion (blockage) or stenosis (narrowing) of the carotid arteries of the neck and/or the branches of the carotid artery. A carotid artery duplex scan is a noninvasive (the skin is not pierced) procedure.

Carotid Ultrasound / Duplex Scan of Extracranial Arteries interpreted by an American Board-Certified cardiologist with over 45 years of experience in interpretation of Carotid Ultrasound. Proper interpretation is the most important aspect of Duplex Scan of extracranial arteries.

You may need this scan if your healthcare provider thinks you may have:

  • A blockage in a carotid artery
  • Narrowing (stenosis) in a carotid artery
  • Transient Ischemic Attack (T.I.A)
  • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Thrombus

A blockage may be caused by a buildup of fatty material (plaque), a blood clot (thrombus), or other substances.

Symptoms of blockage may include:

  • Dizziness
    • Confusion
    • Drowsiness
    • Headache
    • Syncope
    • Numbness and weakness of the left side
    • Blurry Vision
    • Slurred speech
    • Temporary blindness in one eye
    • Temporary inability to speak or move

A normal result means there is no problem with the blood flow in the carotid arteries. The artery is free of any significant blockage, narrowing, or other problem.

An abnormal result means the artery may be narrowed, or something is changing the blood flow in the carotid arteries. This is a sign of atherosclerosis or other blood vessel conditions.

In general, the more narrowed the artery is, the higher your risk for stroke.
